Water Distribution Trivia

In Egypt, excavators found a moat inside a tomb. After 5,000 years, it still fills with water coming from underground pipes connected to the Nile.

The earliest recorded use of iron pipe was in Langensalza, Germany around 1562. It was used to supply water to a fountain.

Water mains were once made of wood.

If the Fire Department needed to access the water, they simply punched a hole in the wooden pipe. Once finished, they just plugged it up. That is why Fireplug is another name for a hydrant.

Other materials used for piping in ancient times were lead, brass, and terra-cotta tiles.

Any break in the protective coating on a pipe or tank is called a Holiday.

Any metal that comes into contact with soil or water can be cathodically protected.
